Toshiba Battery Exchange Program Frequently Asked Questions

The following frequently asked questions address some questions you may have about the Toshiba Battery Exchange Program. Please refer to the Toshiba Battery Exchange Program Information document for detailed information about how to identify a battery eligible for replacement, and for instructions on how to submit a replacement request.

Q1:       What is the nature of the issue behind the Toshiba Battery Exchange Program?  Can you explain in greater detail?

A1:       Some of the battery packs provided to Toshiba by a third party and installed in certain Toshiba notebook PCs or sold as accessories for Toshiba notebook PCs may fail to properly charge or discharge.

Q2:       Specifically, what may happen?

A2:       If an affected battery fails to provide power, the notebook PC in which it is installed can operate only when it is connected to AC power.  A notebook PC with an affected battery that is in use with no external power connected may be subject to an immediate system shutdown, should a battery failure occur. If your notebook PC shuts down in this manner, data which has not been saved may be lost.

Q3:       How can I determine if an affected battery pack is installed in my notebook PC?

A3:       Toshiba has provided a software utility to determine if the battery installed in a notebook PC may be affected. Please download and run the Test Utility utility as directed in the Toshiba Battery Exchange Program Information document.  If you cannot or do not want to download the utility, a suspect battery pack can be identified visually by following the instructions in the Visual Inspection Instructions document.

Q4:       How can I replace the battery pack?  Can a person not very familiar with computers replace the battery pack?

A4:       Yes.  The User’s Manual for your Toshiba Notebook PC includes specific instructions on battery removal and installation.  It is not difficult for a user to replace the battery pack by following these instructions.

Q5:       Am I required to return the affected battery pack after it is replaced?

A5:       Yes.  You will be provided with instructions and packaging materials with prepaid return shipping for returning the affected battery pack to Toshiba. Certain state and/or federal laws make it illegal to dispose of batteries in your household waste. Please return your affected battery pack to Toshiba for proper recycling and/or disposal.

Q6:       What is the deadline to participate in the replacement program and receive the replacement battery pack?

A6:       The Toshiba Battery Exchange Program will be effective through December 31, 2006.  Accordingly, please apply for the replacement battery pack before the exchange program expires.

Q7:       Do I have to replace the battery pack even though I haven’t had any problems?

A7:       No. However, if your notebook PC has one of the suspect batteries, Toshiba recommends that the battery pack be replaced regardless of the occurrence of any symptoms.

Q8:       What should I do if the Test Utility does not seem to be working on my system?

A8:       If the utility does not work as expected you may choose to inspect your battery pack visually by removing it from the notebook PC and examining the attached label. See the Visual Inspection Instructions document for more details.

Q9:       I can not find the Test Utility in my language?

A9:       Please use any of the other languages available or the Visual Inspection Instructions. Alternatively, you can contact the Toshiba Help Desk or a Toshiba Authorized Service Provider for assistance.
